There were many opportunities for delegates to take an active role in participating at the Cape Town '06 summit.
Formal sessions
Sessions included:
- Scene-setting panel discussion on chronic disease prevention, what we are trying to achieve, and what are the barriers to success
- Health diplomacy – using it to achieve our objectives
- Communities of change – including promoting chronic disease prevention in faith-based communities
- The scandal and challenge of delivering medicines for chronic disease
- Update on the Grand Challenges project

There were also four parallel, optional sessions on the second day:

All delegates took part in workgroup discussion around one of four themes:

- Healthy business (Workplace)

- It’s the future (Youth)

Other opportunities for participation
- ‘Soapbox session’ at which delegates talked about their ideas and projects.
- Plenty of discussion throughout the event, and delegates (and those wishing to participate from outside Cape Town) were encouraged to post comments and questions on the summit website.
- Q&A sessions in plenary and in the parallel sessions.
- Breakfast meetings were arranged for delegates wishing to discuss issues of interest.
- Opportunities for delegates to blog and podcast on the summit website.
- Further interaction will be encouraged, to build a ‘virtual alliance’ online.
