About the competition
We asked young people from around the world, aged 18–27, to submit ideas or examples that demonstrate aspects of healthy urban environments or healthy urban design. Submissions included photos, videos, songs, sounds. Examples that demonstrate aspects of unhealthy urban environments or urban design were also accepted.
The competition was hosted online at www.fit-city.org and all submissions were uploaded directly to the website using a simple, online platform. The competition was open to submissions from 16 October 2007 until 14 December 2007. The five best submissions were selected by a panel of judges and the winners will be awarded a free trip to Sydney, Australia, where they will be invited to showcase their submissions and the submissions of their peers at the annual summit >> of the Oxford Health Alliance.
3FOUR50
The Fit City website was hosted on the 3FOUR50 online web platform, and all entrants to the competition are automatically entered onto the 3FOUR50 online network >> After submitting an entry on Fit City, participants were encouraged to fill out their 3FOUR 50 network profile with some brief biographical information and a picture, after which they were given access to the extensive features of the network where they can share their thoughts and ideas through blogging or posting photos, as well as access the array of information already on the site.
The Sydney Challenge
As part of the competition, all entrants were also asked to provide feedback on a draft of the Sydney Challenge >> The Sydney Challenge is a short document that challenges all members of society to move towards lifestyles that are healthier for people and the planet. As a dynamic document, all comments and suggestions to the Sydney Challenge will be taken into account to ensure that the document is relevant to us all, whether we are viewing it as an individual or as a member of a group. An updated version of the Sydney Challenge will be presented at the summit.
At the summit
At the summit, a showcase of Fit City entries will be on display at the rear of the conference hall. On the second day of the summit, the five winners of the Fit City competition will give a short presentation on what young people consider to be important factors in creating a healthy city, after which a short video will be shown highlighting a montage of Fit City entries.
