Intervention activities

As with all CIH projects >>, interventions will take place in four locations:

Workplaces

All small- and medium-sized industries in the intervention area will be covered, and interventions will include the following:

  • Focus-group discussions to build a sense of community
  • Education and awareness through a series of lectures, video films, role plays and street plays.
  • Structural changes, turning research/evidence into action and policies

Neighbourhoods

  • Creation of a network of local NGOs, community leaders and peer leaders in schools
  • ‘Mediators of change’ – community and peer leaders – will learn to identify high-risk cases
  • Screening algorithm – a strategy to screen and identify, educate and refer high-risk individuals

Health centres

All the centres and pharmacies located in one area of the city will be covered to include approximately 60 doctors and 100 paramedics. The intervention will include the following:

  • Continuing medical education (CME) to educate about chronic-disease screening and lifestyle modification
  • Exit interviews for 10 adult patients every week for quality check
  • Workshops every six months to provide feedback about the study for long-term sustainability
  • Structural changes

Schools

  • Health education materials about obesity, physical inactivity and other risk factors will be developed and made available in English and Hindi. Content of interventional tools will be context specific, culturally specific and resource specific.
  • Workshops for teachers to give them information about the project, planned activities, a timetable and their responsibilities. A second workshop will finalise manuals for peer educators, keeping in mind students’ knowledge, attitudes and beliefs. Subsequent meetings will take place once the project rolls out for project review and evaluation.
  • Workshops for peer educators - teachers will be responsible for selecting students and organising training workshops. These peer educators will be responsible for carrying out information sessions about health.
  • Structural changes to change behaviour and practices of the children in a sustainable way.
