New Delhi is a major urban centre within the metropolis of Delhi in the north of India.

  • Delhi is home to 15,279,000 people (2004) and the population of New Delhi is 295,000 (2003).
  • The population has a literacy rate of above 81%.

Risk factors

Living in a centre of global commerce and activity, New Delhi’s inhabitants have increased access to high-salt/fat/sugar foods, improved technology and transportation that lead to sedentary behaviour, and widespread advertising and availability of tobacco products.
